PFI, Inc. offers the following Defensive Rifle instruction:

DEFENSIVE RIFLE I

TUITION:  $400.00
PRE-REQUISITE: YES (SEE PRE-REQUISITES SECTION BELOW)
DURATION:  16 HRS (2 DAYS)
AMMO REQUIREMENT:

  • 400 ROUNDS (RIFLE)
  • 200 ROUNDS (HANDGUN)

This TWO-DAY, 16 hour course is a foundational introductory to the defensive/tactical use of a rifle. This course is designed for students with no or very little formal rifle training. The curriculum will take the student through the basic, safe gun handling skills for the rifle’s operating system, and move into defensive rifle marksmanship. The goal is have the new rifle student to become highly competent in his/her rifle handling skills.

For the purpose of this course, any 223/5.56mm or larger caliber rifle, preferably a magazine fed, semi-automatic military style; will suffice. Though lever-action or pump action rifles can be used. They are too cumbersome to use in a defensive shooting/tactical environment.

Examples of acceptable rifles include:

  • M-16/AR-15/M-4 platform
  • Mini-14
  • M-14/M-1A
  • FN, FN-FAL
  • HK 91 & 93/PTR 91
  • LaRue OBR
  • Robinson XCR
  • M1 Carbine
  • AK-47/SKS

The vast majority of the shooting will keep target engagement from contact to 50 yards. The emphasis is on building a students skills and accuracy to engage targets at a longer distance as his/her future rifle training continues. Drills and scenarios will will be based on the defensive shooting environment. This is not a long-distance shooting, sniper course.

All rifles are required to have a two or three point sling. The military style two-point is preferred. Optics (such as: Aimpoint, EOTech, and ACOG) are optional. All rifles shall have iron sights. If a rifle is equipped with a tactical light, please keep it on. Tactical lights will not be needed in this course. But will be needed in the low light/night shooting portions of Defensive Rifle II & III.

Additional course-specific equipment:

    • Knee & elbow pads
    • Minimum three rifle magazines with pouches/carriers
    • Handgun with minimum three magazines (to be carried throughout course)
    • Two or three point sling
    • Binoculars (optional)

  • Classroom lecture/demonstrations
  • Review of Safety rules and range procedures
  • Rifle set-up & sighting systems
  • Rifle nomenclature and operating systems
  •  Rifle ballistics & cartridge selection
  • Cleaning and maintenance
  • Zeroing and live-fire function testing
  • Gun handling, manipulation, and marksmanship with the rifle
  • Target engagement out to 50 yards
  • Multiple target engagement
  • Malfunction clearances
  • Use of cover
DEFENSIVE RIFLE II

TUITION:  $400.00
DURATION:  16+ HRS (2 DAYS)
PRE-REQUISITE: YES (SEE PRE-REQUISITES SECTION BELOW)
AMMO REQUIREMENT:

  • 400 ROUNDS (RIFLE)
  • 250 ROUNDS (HANDGUN)

This TWO DAY, 16 hour-plus course will take the student well above the basic foundations of defensive rifle shooting. More emphasis will be placed on using the rifle in a tactical environment while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.

Students will be teamed with other shooters in a variety of drills. Decision making and communication will be included.

There will be an introduction of low light/night shooting, where the student will perform the day light drills during hours of darkness with and without artificial light. Weapon mounted tactical lights are high recommended.

The rifle requirements and equipment needed are the same as Defensive Rifle I.

    • Clear glasses for night shooting
    • Knee and elbow pads – optional
    • Handgun with three magazines (to be carried throughout course)
    • Minimum of three rifle magazines with carry pouches/holders
    • Two or three point sling
    • Binoculars (optional)
    • Flashlight

DEFENSIVE RIFLE III

TUITION:  $400.00
DURATION:  16+ HRS (2 DAYS)
PRE-REQUISITE: YES (SEE PRE-REQUISITES SECTION BELOW)
AMMO REQUIREMENT:

  • 400 ROUNDS (RIFLE)
  • 250 ROUNDS (HANDGUN)

This TWO-DAY, 16 hour-plus course is an advanced course that challenges a student rifle skills in a defensive/tactical environment.

This course has its roots in LAPD’s Police Rifle (originally Urban Police Rifle (UPR)) Program, Rifle Instructor Training School (RITS), and training from various specialized units.

More movement, decision making, and higher marksmanship challenges will be employed. Partner and team drills will be used. Shooting from various forms of cover including vehicles. Building searching/clearing tactics will be covered.

There will be low light/night shooting of the advance drills and scenario based drills requiring tactical solutions.

    • Handgun with three magazines (to be carried throughout course)
    • Minimum of three rifle magazines with carry pouches/holders
    • Two or three point sling

  • Shooting on the move
  • Transition drills from rifle, to handgun, to back-up (if student carries one)
  • Transition to handgun while moving

  • Advanced low-light/night shooting drills and scenarios
